Reflections of a debut author

It is hard to believe quite how quickly the months have gone since my debut novel was published on 10th April, 2025. It has been a whirlwind, a rollercoaster and mostly brilliant! Some of the highs have included being reviewed in The Times, becoming a number one bestseller in the digital book charts and appearing on the Standard Issue podcast.

By far, the best thing has been meeting readers who have connected with Alfred and Kian and have enjoyed my writing. I’ve loved taking part in bookshop talks and being invited to book clubs. There is nothing more rewarding as a writer than to know that my words have resonated with others and that people love the story that I’ve created.

There have been some challenges too, including juggling the writing of book 2 while still promoting book 1, alongside family life and my job. However, I never take any of this for granted and try and appreciate the whole experience!

There is such a build up to publication and I’ve heard other authors say that it’s normal to feel flat once the day comes around but I have to say, sharing publication day by holding a book launch attended by family, friends and colleagues was one of the best moments of my debut year.

I have certainly learned a lot this year, about myself, the publishing business and the lovely bookish community I now feel a part of and I’m excited to launch my second novel, The Memory Keeper next summer!
